Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State Is Dead

According to reports, Akeredolu died in Lagos on Wednesday.

The Ondo governor died at the age of  67.

It was learnt that he was managed by State House doctors up to his death because they could not fly him abroad.

“Akeredolu is dead; he died in Lagos,” a reliable source told Vanguard.

“They were looking for dialysis machines to be sent to his secret location in Lagos last week.”

Background:

Akeredolu experienced health issues after seeking medical treatment abroad in June. Although he returned to Nigeria in September, he remained in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

On Wednesday, December 13, he proceeded on another medical leave and wrote a notice formally transferring power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa who later assumed the responsibilities of the governor in full acting capacity.

Following his return to Nigeria in September, Akeredolu stayed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital and tried to govern his state from there, leading to public outrage.

Akeredolu’s wife, Betty announced the suspension of activities lined up to celebrate her 70th birthday.

The Ondo first lady announced the suspension of the activities in Twitter posts after questions were raised over plans to have a fanfare despite her husband’s ill health.

How Boss Mustapha, Emefiele Stole $6.2 million Cash From CBN Vault Two Weeks To Presidential Election

The special investigator tasked with probing the Central Bank of Nigeria has returned with recommended charges for some senior officials of the past administration, saying they were linked to a brazen and relentless heist of public coffers.

Jim Obazee said President Bola Tinubu should authorise the prosecution of former cabinet secretary Boss Mustapha and ex-central bank chief Godwin Emefiele for their roles in the removal of $6.23 million cash from the bank’s cellar in Abuja.

The alleged theft, said to have taken place on February 8, 2023, roughly two weeks ahead of the February 25 presidential election, was listed among a laundry of alleged corrupt diversion of public money linked to Mr Emefiele and other officials of the Buhari administration.

Narrating the heist to Mr Tinubu in an undated memorandum believed to have reached the president on December 20, 2023, Mr Obazee said it was around February 7-8, 2023, that his investigators discovered that “$6.23 million was unlawfully removed from the vault cash from the foreign payments office, Abuja branch, of the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

“The physical acts of unlawful removal of this amount were captured on the CCTV footage and preserved,” Mr Obazee added.

Mr Obazee, who took the special investigator job despite his own past corruption and abusive behaviour, said efforts to steal the cash commenced on January 26 when Mr Mustapha sent a memo to Mr Emefiele requesting $6.23 million in cash. The memo itself followed a previous one dated January 23 from Mr Buhari to Mr Mustapha, which carried the header: “Presidential Directive on Foreign Election Observer Missions.”

Mr Obazee did not return a request from The Gazette seeking to obtain the video. Still, the anti-graft czar said the investigation suggested that the money was not given to foreign observers, adding that a CBN employee flagged the transaction as suspicious but failed to act.

The investigator held the unreported transaction as part of an elaborate conspiracy to cover up wrongdoing by the previous regime at the CBN.

“A fraudulent cash withdrawal of $6.23 million perpetrated since February 8, 2023, was not discovered nor taken seriously until December 4, 2023, when a request for information was issued by the officer of the special investigator,” Mr Obazee said, adding that there was “an appearance of concealment” by CBN directors and departmental heads, including Ogbu Onyeka, Samuel Chukwuyem Okojere, Elizabeth Fasoranti,

Consequently, Mr Obazee said Messrs Mustapha, Emefiele and those listed above, among others, should be charged for forgery, concealment, stealing, conspiracy and fraud.

Mr Obazee said his investigation into CBN’s actions under Mr Emefiele would continue. He did not immediately recommend charges against Mr Buhari himself, although it was unclear if future evidence would compel him to bring charges against the former president, which would be the first in Nigerian history.

Mr Mustapha declined comments when reached by The Gazette on Saturday evening for this story. An aide to Mr Emefiele said the ex-CBN chief, who was freed on Friday after 195 days in custody, had no comments

MASSIVE FRAUD!

Nigerian Billionaire Charged With Multimillion-Dollar Fraud, Days After Winning Award

Nigerian billionaire businessman Mmobuosi Banye, also known as Dozy Mmobuosi, is facing fraud charges from the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.

In a statement released recently, the SEC said Tingo Group, a pan-African agri-fintech innovator, lied about having $461.7m in its subsidiary Tingo Mobile's Nigerian bank accounts when it only had $50.

Financial Times reports that Mmobuosi operates three affiliated US-based entities, of which he is the chief executive officer — Tingo Group Inc., Agri-Fintech Holdings Inc., and Tingo International Holdings Inc.

Details of the charges against Tingo According to the SEC, Mmobuosi is being charged with an alleged multi-year scheme to inflate the financial performance metrics of his companies and key operating subsidiaries to defraud investors worldwide.

SEC also noted that it seeks emergency relief to prevent the defendants' continued dissemination of false information to investors and protect corporate and investor assets. The statement reads:

"The SEC’s complaint, filed on December 18, 2023, alleges that, since at least 2019, Mmobuosi spearheaded a scheme to fabricate financial statements and other documents of the three entities and their Nigerian operating subsidiaries, Tingo Mobile Limited and Tingo Foods PLC.

"The complaint further alleges that Mmobuosi made and caused the entities to make material misrepresentations about their business operations and financial success in press releases, periodic SEC filings, and other public statements.

“For instance, Tingo Group’s fiscal year 2022 Form 10-K filed in March 2023 reported a cash and cash equivalent balance of $461.7m in its subsidiary Tingo Mobile’s Nigerian bank accounts. In reality, those same bank accounts allegedly had a combined balance of less than $50 as of the end of fiscal year 2022.

"According to the SEC’s complaint, Defendants also fabricated the customer relationships that formed the basis of their purported businesses.

“The complaint alleges that Mmobuosi and the entities he controls have fraudulently obtained hundreds of millions in money or property through these schemes, and that Mmobuosi has siphoned off funds for his personal benefit, including purchases of luxury cars and travel on private jets, as well as an unsuccessful attempt to acquire an English Football Club Premier League team, among other things

The commission added that Mmobuosi was being charged with lying to auditors, insider trading, and failing to file Form 4 disclosing the sales of millions of Agri-Fintech common stock for which he was the ultimate beneficial owner.

The charges against Tingo CEO came barely a few days after Tingo bagged a new entry award at the 17th edition of the Seras Awards in Lagos

Onibeju Faults Court Ruling Over Injunction

The Onibeju of Ibeju, Oba Waliu Olasunkanmi Rasak has faulted the restraining order placed on him by a Lagos High Court from parading himself as the dully installed paramount ruler of Ibeju Kingdom.

This followed the successful grant of an order of mandatory injunction secured by one of the co-aspirants to the Onibeju throne, Prince Adewale Adeyemi Abdul Rauf from the High Court of Lagos on the 12th December 2023.

The injunction directed the Governor of Lagos State and two of his cabinet members, the Hon. Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice and Hon. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to reverse the installation of the Onibeju, HRM Oba Waliu Olasunkanmi Rasak pending the determination of the substantive suit initiated by Prince Adewale Adeyemi Abdul Rauf.

The claimant in Suit No: LD/9297GCMW/2022 had dragged the Governor of Lagos State and 21 others including Oba Waliu Olasunkanmi Rasak before the High Court of Lagos State, sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos via a writ of Summons and Statement of Claim filed on the 27th of October, 2022 praying the Court for a mandatory injunction for the reversal of the installation of the Lagos monarch on the ground that the installation was carried out on the 3rd of November, 2022, two days after the Governor and his commissioners had been served with the court processes.

Oba Waliu Olasunkanmi Rasak has since filed his appeal against the injunction at the Court of Appeal in Lagos. In his Appeal, the Onibeju averred that he had already been appointed and installed as the paramount ruler of Ibeju Kingdom by the state government after successfully passing through the selection and installation process two weeks before the injunction was granted by the High Court.

The Onibeju argued that it amounts to a miscarriage of justice when the lower court failed to properly evaluate the affidavit and exhibit before granting the order.

With the court order, the Onibeju throne by implication remains vacant until after the determination of the Appeal and the substantive suit.

Speaking on the socio-economic and cultural implication, a co-aspirant to the Onibeju throne who incidentally is now the Olu of Araromi Eleranigbe, Oba Hameed Ajijola remarked that the Onibeju throne remains central and strategic to the survival of the Ibeju region in the state.

He, therefore, appeal to all the parties to sheathe their swords and embrace peace for the common interest of the Ibeju region which he reasoned should be paramount above personal interest.

BREAKING NEWS: Supreme Court Declines To Free Nnamdi Kanu

The Supreme Court early this morning (Friday 15th December 2023) declined to order the release of the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, from detention.

The Supreme Court held that although the Nigerian government recklessly and unlawfully abducted Kanu from Kenya, such an unlawful act has not divested any court from proceeding with trial.

Justice Lawal said that no Nigerian law was cited in the suit seeking Kanu’s release on mere unlawful abduction from Kenya, adding that at the moment, the remedy for such action is for Kanu to file a civil matter against such act instead of removing the powers of courts to continue with his trial for alleged criminal charges.

The apex court subsequently ordered that Kanu should go and defend himself in the remaining 7 counts of terrorism charges against him.

NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER! Why Ondo First Lady, Son Prevented Akeredolu From Resigning As Governor

By Lanre Olaleye

Left for the ailing Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, the Bible quotes 'Vanity Upon Vanity, All Is  Vanity' surely drives home the futility of man's struggles in life. For this, the embattled governor may have given up hope of retaining his position as Ondo State Governor.

But for his wife, Betty and son, Babajide, the governor has become a subject of ridicule by the opposition and ordinary Nigerians who have been criticizing him for creating a leadership crisis in the state.

The Snoop exclusively gathered that following his prolonged medical leave in Germany, Akeredolu's prognosis was declared critical and was advised to return home to continue treatment for leaukemia, a blood cancer caused by a rise in the number of white blood cells in the body.

Rather than returning to Ondo, he has been staying in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, where he is recieving treatment. His absence from Government House in Akure has therefore given credence to claim of his incapacitation to discharge his duty as governor.

Akeredolu has been under intense pressure from opposition parties to resign or hand over power to his deputy in line with the 1999 constitution but he has failed to resign.

Family sources revealed that the ailing governor is completely overwhelmed by the rigour and pain of the chemotherapy treatment which knocks him out for up to 10 hours.

“Each time the governor receives a shot of his chemical therapy, he is knocked out for at least 10 hours.

“As a result, the governor is barely lucid throughout the day and night,” the source added.

Perhaps, sensing the end may be nearer than expected, the ailing governor has reportedly requested to be taken to Owo, his home town, where he hopes to continue his treatment. But sources said the request has been rebuffed by the wife and son, Babajide. They were reportedly holing up the governor in Ibadan in order to shield his health status away from the people so as to continue to hold on to power.

"Both the wife and son ignored the governor's directive because they feared his incapacity to govern the state would be known to the public and they do not want this to happen. They want the governor to continue to hold on to power till the end of his tenure.

"The governor wanted to resign in order to face his treatment fully but he is being prevented by his wife and son. You can liken what is happening in Ondo State now to what happened during Yar' Adua presidency when some people prevented the president from resigning until the president passed away.

"They are preventing Akeredolu from resigning because of their own selfish interest. They are not considering the interest of the state; they want to hold on to power by all means. This is rather unfortunate," says our source.

Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), and former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), won his re-election as the state governor in October 2020 and was sworn in for a second term in office in February 2021.

It would be recalled that President Tinubu on November 24 met with over 50 persons including Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa; his and aides of Governor Akeredolu, state commissioners, party chieftains and some elders of the state to resolve the leadership crisis in Ondo State.

JINX BREAKER! Osimhen Wins CAF Player of the Year Award

After a 24-year drought, Nigeria has finally reclaimed the coveted CAF Player of the Year Award, this time with the electrifying Victor Osimhen helping to break the jinx.

Following in the footsteps of Nigerian football legends like Kanu Nwankwo, Emmanuel Amuneke, Victor Ikpeba and the late Rashidi Yekini, Osimhen’s phenomenal 2022/23 season has earned him the coveted African crown.

His exploits with Napoli, guiding them to the Serie A title, and the Super Eagles, leading the AFCON qualification goalscoring charts, solidified his position as the undisputed choice for the award.

His 31 goals for Napoli, including 26 in the Serie A alone, speak volumes of his talent and impact.

Before the latest accolade in Morocco on Monday night, Osimhen’s achievements haven’t gone unnoticed.

He was recognized at the Napoli and Serie A level and on the global stage, securing the 8th spot in the prestigious Ballon d’Or.

Not Easy

One must admit that Osimhen winning the African Player of the Year award was not easy.

The competition from Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi was fierce but Osimhen’s brilliance and team success ultimately shone through.

Salah’s goalscoring prowess for Liverpool and Hakimi’s contributions to Morocco’s historic World Cup run were impressive, but Osimhen’s consistency and impact throughout the year were undeniable.

With the CAF Award now in the kitty, Osimhen will be hoping for another good placing at the FIFA Best Awards where he has been nominated along with the likes of Lionel Messi, and Erling Haaland.

'You're A Spendrift' - Ex-Commissioner Blasts Gov. Adeleke For Spending N2 Billion On Entertainment In Three Months

A former Commissioner for Works and Transportation in Osun State, Remi Omowaiye, has claimed that the incumbent governor of the state, Ademola Adeleke, spent N2 billion on entertainment in three months. Omowaiye lamented that Adeleke’s one year in office was uneventful.

The former Commissioner wondered why Adeleke was mismanaging the state’s resources despite claiming that he is from a rich family.

He argued that the former administration led by Gboyega Oyetola worked hard to move the state forward, adding that when he handed over, Osun had become one of the best states in terms of health care indices in Nigeria.

According to him, “Instead, in three months he spent N2bn naira on entertainment at the governor’s office, while neighbouring Kwara State has used N88m for nine months. This is a man who claims to be from a rich family. So, if you are from a rich family, why are you mismanaging our resources? Look at the health indices, when Oyetola came in, Osun used to have the highest maternal death rate.

“But when we were leaving, Osun had become one of the best states in terms of health care indices in Nigeria. This is because we painstakingly built and revitalised 332 health centres in the state.

“Not only that, we renovated and also provided basic equipment needed for those primary health care centres according to World Health Organisation standards. We also ensured that those primary health care centres were funded through basic provisions fund and the people who delivered at the primary health care centres increased annually from over 20,000 to over 50,000.
“In terms of infrastructure, we did a lot of roads and what we did was to conduct a citizen needs assessment. We didn’t just wake up and say we wanted to do something.”

EFCC Arraigns Man for Alleged $63,590 Fraud in Lagos

The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Lagos has arraigned Abdulhamid Isah before Justice I.O. Ijelu of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja on  three-count charges bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, stealing and retention of proceeds of a criminal conduct.

One of the counts reads: "Abdulhamid Isah, sometime in October 2022, at Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, obtained a total sum of $63,590 (Sixty-three Thousand Five Hundred and Ninety United States Dollars) from Chinedu Ugokwe by falsely representing Chinedu Ugokwe that the money was for the supply of the Dollar equivalent, which pretence you knew to be false."

Another count reads:  "Abdulhamid Isah, sometime in October 2022, at Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, obtained and retained the total sum of $63,590 (Sixty-three Thousand Five Hundred and Ninety Dollars) from Chinedu Ugokwe, being proceeds of criminal conduct to wit stealing."

He pleaded "not guilty" to the charges when they were read to him.

Following his plea, counsel for the EFCC, N.K. Ukoha, prayed the court for a trial date for the prosecution to open its case. “We also pray that the defendant be remanded at the Correctional Centre,” he said.

The defence counsel, E.A. Ogbeche, however, informed the court of the bail application of his client. "We have an application pending before the Honourable Court. It is a summons for bail, and the prosecution has been served," he said.  He, thereafter, moved the bail application.

Ruling on the bail application, Justice Ijelu held that "bail is to ensure future attendance".  The Judge, therefore, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N5million, with two sureties in like sum, one of whom must be a blood relation. The case was adjourned till February 1, 2024, for trial and the defendant ordered to be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.

DRAMA! Slovenian Club Sacks Nigerian Footballer For Impregnating Club President’s Daughter

A Slovenian football club has reportedly sacked a Nigerian player for getting the club president’s daughter pregnant.

It has been reported that an unnamed Nigerian football player in Slovenia has been fired by his club for impregnating the daughter of the president of the second division outfit just six months after he joined them.

According to Ghana Soccernet, the player whose name has been withheld, was fired for ‘gross misconduct and indiscipline’ over the pregnancy which he has claimed full responsibility.

The publication also reports that there are four Nigerians players (Bede Osuji, Temitope Nelson, Gerald Chiyoke and Sulaiman Adedoja) registered with second-tier clubs in Slovenia, but it’s unclear which of them is involved in the pregnancy scandal.

The player involved in the pregnancy scandal is said to have returned to Nigeria and he is worried about the well-being of his girlfriend and her pregnancy.  He is now considering involving FIFA into the situation following the club’s decision to sack him after only joining them in May 2019.

Narrating his ordeal, he said:

” I signed a three year deal with the option of another year but last month I ran into trouble when my girlfriend who happens to be the daughter of the president said she was pregnant for me”, he said.

” The club got to know about it and summoned me for a meeting. I got there and admitted that I am responsible for the pregnancy and I was told to stay at home and not to be seen around the club premises until I am instructed to return.

” A week later I was called to the office and told that my agent has been informed about their plans to terminate my contract for gross misconduct and indiscipline. The news came to me as a surprise because I have not been found wanting in any area since I arrived the club six months ago”.

” My agent called me up and said we should file a case with FIFA that he has a recording of the president saying my contract was terminated for having an affair with his daughter. She’s an adult for God sake, we both love each other and decided to have a child.

” Now I don’t know what will happen to her and the child since I’m back in Nigeria. They have forced her to block me on all social media platforms so we have not been communicating. The few friends I made at the club are also scared of speaking to me about her apparently they don’t want to run into trouble with the team. I’m confused right now”, he concluded.

FINGERED! Seyi Tinubu Behind Aborted NANS Convention

. Allegedly Plots To Impose Candidate As President

By Lanre Olaleye

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's son, Seyi Tinubu has been fingered as a prime suspect in the recent pandemonium that rocked yesterday's aborted annual conference of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
The conference which held at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja on Thursday 29th November 2023 was marred by heavy shootings as opposing delegates were involved in a free for all fight in an ill-fated bid to elect a new NANS President and national leaders.
Multiple sources claim several students were injured during the fracas.
According to reports, the violence started when opposition delegates were accosted by thugs who were purportedly backing a candidate that President Bola Tinubu’s son Seyi was supporting.
It would be recalled one of Seyi's cronies, Sunday Ashefon was recently appointed Senior Special Assistant on Student Engagement to the president at the behest of Seyi.
Investigation revealed that Ashefon working in league with Seyi has, thereafter, reportedly anointed one Lucky Emonefe as NANS President prior to the conference.
But the choice of the Delta State-born student activist has not gone down well with opposing delegates many of whom were of the opinion that the Delta State College of Education graduate is too old to occupy NANS leadership.
Since Emonefe departed the Delta State College of Education in Warri in 2003, numerous stakeholders and students believe that he is unfit.
Many opined that politicians particularly Seyi Tinubu have raised a substantial amount of money to influence the current election in Emonefe’s favour.

A student who spoke on the aborted conference said, “It’s extremely shameful to see old men who should rather be more concerned about the lives and welfare of their wives and kids fighting for positions in the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
“Imagine someone who left the College of Education since 2003, about 20 years ago is now planning to become president of the association due to the selfishness of some people working with politicians.”
Another student added, “This same old man, his wife is a serving councillor under PDP in Delta, she is serving her second tenure, so you can guess his age. He is supported by the Delta State Government machinery over this.
“But in Abuja, he is claiming to be an APC member after racketeers led by Asefon collected millions of Naira from him and sold him to Seyi Tinubu as APC candidate for NANS President. Now they came here and started shooting anyhow and attacking delegates who are not in support of Lucky.”
