Nigeria Battles England For Arsenal Prodigy, Ethan Nwaneri

Egg heads at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are currently locked in a fierce battle with England over the international future of Arsenal prodigy, Ethan Nwaneri.

The 18-year-old is facing a major decision over his international future. He has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season at Arsenal, scoring eight goals and providing one assist in 28 matches.

Nwaneri has since been fast-tracked through the England youth system, making his first start for the Under 21s against Portugal on Monday. He stood out, netting their first goal in a 4-2 win. It was a trademark finish from the teenager as he cut in from the right before curling an inch-perfect shot into the bottom corner.

There has been talk that Nwaneri could be next in line for a senior England call-up after Phil Foden and Jarrod Bowen struggled in his position during the international break. Nwaneri's Arsenal teammate Bukayo Saka is first-choice in that area but he hasn't featured since December after undergoing hamstring surgery.

Although Nwaneri has been playing for England throughout the age groups, he is expected to have a huge decision to make over his long-term international future. Investigation at the NFF office in Abuja indicate that Nigeria have 'launched a bid' to lure Nwaneri away from the Three Lions and convince him to change his allegiance.

It's claimed that high-ranking officials from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) plan to meet with the youngster's family and make their case. Nwaneri's father is Nigerian and is eligible to play for the Super Eagles.

In recent years, Nigeria have secured the services of Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey, Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi, despite all of them being eligible to play for England. It's hoped that Nigeria can make Nwaneri their next acquisition, as they look to build a squad ready for the 2026 World Cup.

But former Nigerian international Sam Sodje believes the nation's football federation will have a tough job convincing Nwaneri to move from England. "He's a fantastic talent," the ex-Charlton man was quoted as saying. "I watched him play against Brentford, and I was very impressed.

"However, convincing him to choose Nigeria over England will be a challenge. The English FA is also keen on keeping him, and they won't let such a talent slip away easily. But in football, you never know."

Nwaneri made his debut for England U21s as a late substitute against France last Friday. He followed that up with playing 73 minutes in the win over Portugal and Lee Carsley is delighted with his progress. In fact, Carsley insisted that he will be regular contact with Arsenal to monitor Nwaneri's development.

"But what we have to keep remembering, [is that] he's 18 [years old], like [it is] unbelievable. So we just have to encourage these guys, it's important the rest of the team support him as well because I'm not sure it's always gonna be as progressive as it is," Carsley said.

Need To Reward Loyal APC Members In Isolo, Ejigbo

An Open Letter to Political Leaders of Oshodi-Isolho Federal Constituency ll.

By Abdulsalam Olasunkanmi (Aiyekooto)

Dear Esteemed Political Leaders,

We, the dedicated members of your party, write this letter with the utmost respect and a deep sense of loyalty to the ideals and values that have guided our political journey. We stand as the backbone of the party, tirelessly working to uphold its principles, mobilizing supporters, and ensuring electoral victories.

However, it is imperative to address the growing concerns regarding the recognition and reward for our sacrifices and struggles.

Party members, from grassroots organizers to committed volunteers, invest their time, resources, and energy to advance the party’s mission. They endure personal and financial hardships, often working under challenging circumstances without adequate appreciation.

Indeed, many have dedicated years—if not decades—to the party’s success, only to find themselves sidelined when it comes to appointments, economic opportunities, or political considerations.

Loyalty and dedication should not go unnoticed or unrewarded. It is demoralizing for hardworking members to see outsiders, newcomers, or individuals with little or no contribution reap the benefits of positions and privileges. This growing discontent has the potential to weaken the party’s foundation and create a disconnect between leadership and its loyal base.

To strengthen party cohesion and morale, we urge the leadership to:

1. *Establish a Transparent Reward System* – Create a structured system to recognize and reward members based on their contributions, loyalty, and dedication.

2. *Prioritize Internal Growth*– Offer opportunities for dedicated party members to rise through the ranks rather than favouring external candidates.

3. *Economic and Social Empowerment*– Facilitate access to economic opportunities, skill development programs, and social benefits for long-serving members.

4. *Inclusivity in Decision-Making*– Ensure grassroots members have a voice in decision-making processes to foster inclusivity and trust.

5. *A Fair and Equitable Appointment Process* – Ensure that political appointments reflect merit and commitment rather than favouritism and patronage.

A strong party is built on a foundation of fairness, recognition, and reward. When party members feel valued, they are more motivated to work towards collective success. We trust that you, as visionary leaders, will take the necessary steps to address these concerns and fortify the party’s unity and progress.

We remain steadfast in our commitment to the party and look forward to seeing positive changes that recognize the sacrifices of loyal members.

Yours sincerely,

Abdulsalam Olasunkanmi (AIYEKOTO)

 Lagos Assembly Crisis:

Why Obasa Won’t Withdraw Lawsuit Against Lawmakers

Despite the intervention of the president, the leadership crisis bedeviling the Lagos State House of Assembly is far from being resolved as combatants in the crisis are back in their trenches as lack of trust has undermined the peace efforts.

At the height of the crisis, Presided Bola Ahmed Tinubu had waded in on the matter in what many thought would bring an end to the crisis. The president in a peace meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja had ordered the immediate reinstatement of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the House while Mojisola Meranda returns to her position as Deputy Speaker. This was after the president had reportedly scolded the embattled speaker for the various infractions levelled against him by his colleagues.

The president nevertheless ordered Obasa to withdraw the court case he instituted against the lawmakers over his impeachment even as he enjoined the lawmakers to cooperate with the speaker for peace to reign.

However, while Obasa has since returned to his position as Speaker of the House, he is yet to withdraw the lawsuit as instructed by the president almost two weeks ago after Tinubu’s intervention sparking fears of the elongation of the crisis.

On his return to the saddled, Obasa had adjourned plenary indefinitely even as he commended his colleagues for embracing peace, there are, however, reports of secret meetings by the 36 opposing lawmakers aimed at orchestrating plots to stay ahead of the speaker in this intense game of wits.

In a bid to douse tension in the house and promote a robust and cordial relationship, the embattled speaker was said initiated peace meetings with the lawmakers individually and collectively all to no avail. He was said to have been rebuffed by the lawmakers.

This development, according to a source in the speaker’s office is the reason why the speaker has refused to withdraw the court case he instituted against the lawmakers over his impeachment.

Obasa is challenging is impeachment by the 36 lawmakers at the Lagos High Court. His counsel, Afolabi Fasanu, (SAN), argued that despite Obasa’s re-election, the lawsuit remains relevant.

He maintained that the Speaker is contesting the allegations in the removal notice—ranging from fraud and high-handedness to abuse of office and gross misconduct—on the grounds that he was denied a fair hearing.

Obasa filed the suit (ID/9047GCM/2025) contesting the constitutionality of the Lagos State House of Assembly’s sitting and proceedings during a recess, which occurred without the Speaker reconvening the House or delegating authority.

The suit addresses the constitutionality of the Lagos State House of Assembly’s proceedings on January 13, 2025, when Obasa was allegedly impeached as Speaker.

Obasa’s application presents nine grounds, including interpretations of various sections of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), as well as the Rules and Standing Orders of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The claimant seeks the court’s interpretation of Sections 36, 90, 92(2)(c), 101, and 311 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), in relation to Order V, Rule 18(2), and Order II, Rule 9(1)(ii)(iii)(iv)(v)(vi)(vii)(viii) of the Lagos State House of Assembly Rules, which have constitutional status.

“Obasa is pressing further with the case as an insurance back up in case the lawmakers attempt to impeach him again. He does not trust them either because he has made overtures to them individually and collectively without success. This means they are still adamant in their stance against him. So, for him, the lawsuit is ostensibly designed to protect him against any possible impeachment. Hence, he is not likely to withdraw the lawsuit,” the source volunteered.

However, The Snoop gathered the opposing lawmakers reportedly accepted the Abuja Peace Deal out of respect for the president but not out of their conviction Obasa would turn a new leaf and let bygones be bygones. They were said to hold fervently to the belief that the speaker would come back to haunt them for their role in his earlier impeachment.

A source close to one of the lawmakers told our correspondent that the lawmakers have lost trust and confidence in the speaker as they believe his return as speaker holds no peace for them. “They are not comfortable with the presidential directive but they agreed out of respect for the president because they know Obasa would come back to haunt them. They know the peace deal is just a smokescreen because they do not trust him to keep his words and that’s why all of them have been avoiding him. They do not want him to sweet talk them into compromising on their collective stance against him,” says our source.

Isolo Indigenes Demand Indigenous Leadership

The indigenes of Isolo Kingdom are uniting in a powerful, nonviolent movement to reclaim their rightful leadership in Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

For decades, non-indigenous leadership has governed, leaving the true sons and daughters of Isolo marginalized and their voices unheard and unattended to.

The Isolo indigenous community, deeply rooted in Awori heritage, has long welcomed settlers and fostered peaceful coexistence.

However, leadership positions have been consistently occupied by non-indigenes, sidelining those who uphold the kingdom’s traditions and development.

"We are not against anyone living and thriving in Isolo," said *Prince Owolabi Bashiru Faronbi*, a prominent community leader. "But leadership must reflect the identity, culture, and heritage of Isolo's true custodians — the indigenes.

Our people must have a say in shaping the future of our homeland."

Key Demands of the Movement:

- Indigenous Representation:* 60% Leadership roles must reflect the voice and values of Isolo's indigenes.

- Equity and Justice:* A fair, inclusive governance structure that respects Isolo’s heritage.

- Cultural Preservation:* Protection of Awori traditions and historical landmarks within Isolo.

The movement calls on His Excellency, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, to intervene and ensure that Isolo indigenes receive fair representation in their own LCDA.

The open letter has been sent and copied to key state and national leaders, traditional rulers, and local political party representatives.

"We call on all stakeholders — from the grassroots to the highest offices — to stand for justice and ensure indigenous leadership is restored to Isolo LCDA," added Faronbi.

"This is not just about leadership — it’s about dignity, identity, and the future of our people."

Kentucky Blesses Fasting Muslims With Bags of Rice

U.S-based philanthropist, Kolawole Odubote a.k.a. Kentucky) is surely giving back to his community with the distribution of bags of rice to support Muslim faithfuls as a form of palliatives in this fasting period.

The distribution of the palliatives which began from his Goloba Street, Isolo, Lagos neighbourhood has since been extended to Muslim folks, friends and associate at LSDPC Estate, Agbabiaka, Mustapha, Moshalashi, Akinbaiye and other adjoining streets to reduce the economic burden on indigent Muslims willing to partake in fasting in this holy month of Ramadan.

This philanthropic initiative which started a few years ago further underscore Odubote's commitment to providing a shoulder to cushion the burden on the less privileged in the society.

As a direct point of contact, selected mosques and Quranic centres were selected as catchment areas even as the elderly were also carefully selected as beneficiaries.

Speaking from his New York-base, the Epe-born businessman said offering a helping hand to the indigents and the elderly at this critical time is a testament to the responsibility God has placed on us to look out for each other.

"Times are hard for our people and what better time to offer a helping hand other than now when we are all looking up to God to salvage this country.

"We cannot continue to look up to government at this  critical period. A little help here and there can put smiles on the faces of our people. The responses we have gotten from this exercise has been tremendous which I think is the tonic we need to do more," says Kentucky.

Odubote's philanthropic gestures towards communal development has won him praises and accolades especially from the United Tailors Association of Isolo who honoured him with an award of excellence mid-last year for his gestures towards members of the association.

Ex Gov. Uzor Kalu In N179M Property Tax Mess In US

Despite his wealth, Kalu has repeatedly failed to meet his tax obligations on these properties, raising new questions about Nigerian politicians’ hidden assets abroad.

A fresh investigation has revealed that Orji Uzor Kalu, a former governor of Abia State and now a senator in Nigeria’s National Assembly, owes $118,282 (N179 million) in unpaid property taxes in the United States.

Documents obtained by The Post and Courier’s Uncovered Project and the Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa show that Kalu’s real estate empire in the U.S. includes multiple properties in South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, and Texas, valued in the millions of dollars.

Despite his wealth, Kalu has repeatedly failed to meet his tax obligations on these properties, raising new questions about Nigerian politicians’ hidden assets abroad.

According to U.S. tax records, Kalu is linked to at least five properties in South Carolina, valued at over $2 million.

His real estate holdings in the Charlotte metro area alone exceed $4.7 million. He also owns two high-end properties near Washington, D.C., including an opulent home with eight bathrooms and a tennis court, which is currently listed for $2.5 million.

But despite these assets, Kalu has been unable or unwilling to pay his property taxes. Records from Spartanburg County, South Carolina, show that after missing multiple deadlines this year, his outstanding balance has ballooned to $118,282.52, including fees for the county’s demolition of an abandoned warehouse on one of his properties.

Kalu’s U.S. real estate ventures date back to the early 1990s, even before he became a state governor in Nigeria. In 1993, while serving as a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Kalu acquired a four-acre tract of land in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

Today, that land is an eyesore. What was once a commercial property with multiple warehouses and homes has now been reduced to red clay dirt, overgrown trees, and a single trash can. Neighbors recall that at one time, several warehouses stood on the site, but one was burned down while another remains abandoned.

A man who identified himself as Nnanna Utah, a former schoolmate of Kalu’s from Nigeria, told The Post and Courier that he had been using the warehouse for years.

“He can buy anything anywhere in the world he wants to,” Utah said. “He likes South Carolina because he was doing business here even before he made a dime.”

However, local businessman Phil Terry, who owns a nearby junkyard, recounted how Kalu almost lost the property. In 2016, Terry and his business partner, Ned Blackwell, purchased the land at a tax auction after Kalu failed to pay his taxes.

They paid $12,342 to clear the outstanding tax bill. But before the one-year grace period expired, a broker acting on Kalu’s behalf paid off the taxes, and the property was returned to him.

Despite this close call, Kalu once again fell behind on his taxes. The latest bill, amounting to $118,282, remains unpaid.

Records show that Kalu’s tax notices are sent to an address in Fort Mill, South Carolina, which was purchased in 2005 by Eunice Uzor. Kalu’s mother is also named Eunice Uzor Kalu, and his brother, Mascot Uzor Kalu, is listed on the title. Mascot, a well-known figure in Nigerian politics, has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

Further investigations reveal that Kalu has used shell companies such as SLOK LLC to buy and sell real estate in the U.S. Some of these properties have been the subject of lawsuits over unpaid homeowners’ association fees.

Between 2007 and 2008—around the same time Nigerian authorities charged him with corruption—Kalu acquired at least nine properties across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Maryland. These included 67 acres of land in Chester and York counties, near Charlotte, North Carolina. A recent inspection of the site revealed that it remains undeveloped and littered with trash.

In Fort Mill, the upscale brick home purchased by Kalu’s mother in 2005 is now listed for sale. Reporters who visited the location observed moving containers and stacked boxes, suggesting recent activity.

Altogether, records indicate that Kalu and his family members have bought and sold over 40 properties in the U.S., raising further questions about the source of his wealth and why he continues to default on his tax obligations.

Despite his claims of being a successful businessman before entering politics, Kalu has long been trailed by corruption allegations. In 2007, Nigerian prosecutors accused him of looting billions of naira from Abia State’s coffers while serving as governor.

After years of legal battles, he was convicted in 2019 and sentenced to 12 years in prison for fraud. But in a controversial decision five months later, Nigeria’s Supreme Court overturned his conviction on technical grounds, setting him free.

Prosecutors vowed to retry the case, but a higher court rejected their request last year, leaving the case in limbo.

Kalu has consistently denied any wrongdoing. However, his lavish lifestyle, political influence, and extensive foreign assets have fueled speculation about how he amassed such immense wealth.

The Post and Courier said repeated attempts to reach Kalu for comments were unsuccessful, as neither he nor his media assistant responded to inquiries.

Kalu is not the only Nigerian politician with significant U.S. real estate holdings.

Investigations show that former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, paid nearly $1 million to purchase a horse farm in Aiken, South Carolina, in 2002, while he was in charge of Nigeria’s government mint.

These revelations have reignited debates about how Nigerian politicians funnel money out of the country and into foreign properties.

The U.S. government has been attempting to crack down on such practices. In 2021, Congress passed the Corporate Transparency Act, aimed at curbing money laundering, terrorism financing, and tax evasion through anonymous real estate purchases.

However, the law has faced resistance. On March 2, the Trump administration announced that it would not enforce it, citing concerns about regulatory burdens on businesses.

Transparency advocates argue that weakening anti-corruption laws will make it easier for corrupt politicians and criminals to launder money through the U.S. real estate market.

Former FBI agent Debra LaPrevotte, who helped launch the agency’s Kleptocracy Initiative, warned that failing to regulate anonymous real estate transactions will have dire consequences.

“We’re supposed to lift people up to our level, not go down to theirs,” she said, referring to how the U.S. has become a haven for foreign kleptocrats.

She pointed out that Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha looted billions of dollars from Nigeria in the 1990s, much of which was hidden in foreign assets before being seized by international authorities.

Experts also argue that allowing corrupt politicians to launder money through real estate distorts local housing markets, pricing out average citizens while allowing criminals to operate with impunity.

“The U.S. is one of the easiest places to hide dirty money in the world,” said Scott Kalman of Transparency International U.S.

 Lagos Assembly Crisis:

Fears Over Obasa’s Unlikely Resignation After Reinstatement

Despite spirited effort of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) to resolve the lingering leadership crisis bedevilling the Lagos State House of Assembly, there are indications to suggest that the peace effort may hit a brick wall.

The Snoop exclusively gathered that the state governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu and the GAC under the leadership of Prince Tajudeen Olusi were given presidential marching order to resolve the crisis within a week following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reported resentment to the Lagos Assembly debacle. The governor and indeed the GAC leadership spent the past weekend to proffer solution to the crisis.

At the end of a marathon tripartite meeting with the lawmakers, the GAC leadership and Gov. Sanwo-olu, it was resolved that Speaker Mojisola Meranda must resign her position on Monday while the impeached speaker, Mudashiru Obasa must be returned to his former position before he is expected to also resign his position to pave the way for a new speaker expected to be elected from among the Lagos West lawmakers to balance the power equation in the state.

As part of the peace deal, the resignation letters of both Meranda and Obasa are expected to be communicated to the GAC on Wednesday 4th March, 2025.

Though this peace pact was initially rejected by majority of the lawmakers, many of who were opposed to Obasa’s return. But they eventually gave in after Gov. Sanwo-olu literally went on his knees to beg them to relax their stance against the embattled Obasa.

The governor’s passionate appeal to the lawmakers according to close sources, stemmed from the cold shoulder he reportedly received from the president over the crisis.

Gov. Sanwo-olu, it was gathered was singled out for blame by the president for being a part of the plot that ousted the former speaker. Hence, Sanwo-olu is sparing no effort at ensuring the crisis is finally settled.

As expected, Speaker Meranda resigned from her position at yesterday’s plenary session amidst thunderous applause from her colleagues. She cited the need to protect the state Assembly as reason for her resignation from the speakership position.

But before announcing her resignation, the lawmakers reportedly took turns to commend her legislative acumen, diligence, and performance within her short time in office.

Showering praises on Meranda, Desmond Olusola Elliot thanked her, saying she demonstrated good leadership and led the house well.

Another lawmaker, Temitope Adewale Ifako-Ijaiye I, said, “We celebrate you for your quality service. You are a heroine of democracy. You came, you saw, you conquer. You are a victim of circumstance. This house is in tears.”

Despite Meranda’s resignation, there were palpable fears that the peace effort seems to be a mirage following Obasa’s entrance into the Assembly complex. Though he reportedly exchanged pleasantries with his fellow lawmakers, many of them remained unfazed by his presence.

Sources say the embattled former speaker remain unpopular among his colleagues as they fear he may renege on his earlier promise to tender his resignation on Wednesday 4th March, 2025.

Their fear, according to sources, is reinforced by the fact that the peace deal has put Obasa in a position of strength to thwart effort at installing a new speaker.

“I just hope the peace deal does not boomerang on us because no one trusts Muda on this. If he decides not to resign as promised, we cannot afford to go into a long legal battle with him. He can use this court case as a decoy to stay longer than necessary.

“Besides, he has a fat pocket to fend off our opposition to his leadership and the longer that continues, the better for him,” says one of the lawmakers in a chat with our correspondent last night.
