 Music Icon, Onyeka Onwenu Slumps, Dies

In Lagos


The Nigerian music and entertainment industry is in mourning following the passing of veteran singer, songwriter, and actress, Onyeka Onwenu.

 The legendary artist reportedly died on Tuesday evening at Reddington Hospital, Lagos

The tragic incident occurred shortly after Onwenu performed at the birthday celebration of Mrs. Stella Okoli. According to eyewitness accounts, the renowned performer collapsed immediately after her performance and was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

An eyewitness at the event shared the heartbreaking news, stating, “It is incredibly sad. Onyeka Onwenu performed brilliantly at Mrs. Stella Okoli's birthday party, but shortly after her performance, she collapsed. Despite being taken to Reddington Hospital, she couldn't be revived.”

Born on January 31, 1952, Onyeka Onwenu was celebrated as "The Elegant Stallion" by the Nigerian media. 

Her illustrious career spanned music, acting, and politics. She once served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and was appointed Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development in 2013.

Onwenu's legacy includes a plethora of hit songs, with "Wait for Me," a duet with Juju maestro King Sunny Ade, standing out among her many memorable tracks.

As of the time of this report, there has been no official statement from her family regarding her passing. The nation remembers Onyeka Onwenu for her significant contributions to Nigerian music and culture, and her loss is deeply felt across the country.
