How Sanwo-olu Orchestrated Obasa’s Impeachment Plot
Despite repeated denials, Gov. Babajide Olushola Sanwo-olu is the central character in the impeachment plot that ousted former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.
Information at The
Snoop disposal has revealed that the governor was actually the main man that
pulled the strings which consumed the former controversial speaker after
getting tacit approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of
the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos.
Sources close to
the Alausa seat of power revealed that in the face of provocation and
embarrassment meted out to him by the controversial lawmaker, the governor
remained calm, waiting for the most auspicious time to strike.
Indeed, the frosty
relationship between the two has remained a public knowledge. Since his
ascension to the assembly leadership seat in 2015, Obasa has never hidden his
ambition to become the state governor someday.
His
confrontational stance against Sanwo-olu and the state executives particularly
on political matters has become a source of concern for the political class and
indeed the ruling APC in the state.
Obasa’s litany of
sins, however, got to a head following the controversial 2024 Lagos State Local
Council Administration Laws which seeks to conduct council elections in only 20
local governments in the state.
A visibly upset
President Tinubu did not only scolded the former speaker during a recent
meeting with the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) members but appears to have
led him to the slaughter’s slab as Gov. Sanwo-olu reportedly seized the
occasion to orchestrate the grand plot for Obasa’s removal.
However, the coup
against Obasa, according, to sources was hatched on 20th November
2024 when Obasa kept the governor, party leaders and other important
dignitaries waiting for more than five hours for the presentation of the 2025
Appropriation Bill to the House of Assembly.
As if that was not
enough, the former speaker did not offer apology to the governor and other
dignitaries upon his eventual arrival at the Assembly. But while the governor
and his delegation waited, there was enough time for him to reach out to other
lawmakers about the need for a change of guard in the House leadership. He
enjoined the lawmakers to show allegiance to only their constituents and party
leaders noting that nobody in the house could guarantee their return at the end
of the current legislative term
There and then it
was discovered the governor’s previous largesse of N200m to the House at the
last budget presentation did not trickle down as expected. Hence, the governor
reportedly promised to reach out to them individually this time around.
Consequently, the
governor was said to have doled out $20,000 each to the lawmakers while also
promising other goodies in the days to come.
This development,
therefore, prompted the decision to pull the rug from Obasa’s groping feet for
lack of trust and confidence. They all resolved to intimate party leaders in
their respective constituencies of the planned impeachment.
On his part, Gov.
Sanwo-olu had ensured he had gotten the support of the influential members of
the GAC and the generality of the party leadership at the state level before
his onslaught against the former speaker.
Obasa thus became
the first House of Assembly Speaker to be impeached in the legislative history
of the state.
