First Lady, Remi Tinubu Blocks EFCC Arrest Of Impeached Lagos Speaker, Obasa

Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has reportedly intervened to shield impeached Lagos Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, from arrest and prosecution over a multibillion-naira fraud investigation, sources within the presidency have revealed.

According to reports from The Gazette, anti-graft agents from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had been prepared to move against Obasa upon his arrival in Nigeria.

However, sources disclosed that Mrs Tinubu directed that Obasa should not be arrested or prosecuted now, citing the need to maintain party unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State.

A presidency official said anonymously, “She said he’s useful to them in Agege and its environs, and they don’t want an immediate crack in their ranks now.

“She said they should continue their investigation but hold off now on touching him because he’s useful to the party.”

Obasa, impeached on January 13 over budgetary fraud and other corruption allegations, is believed to wield significant political influence in key Lagos constituencies such as Agege and Alimosho, which played a decisive role in the 2023 elections.

Tinubu reportedly argued that Obasa’s stronghold in these areas is crucial to President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, and his arrest at this time could destabilize the party’s structure in the state.

It was learnt that the EFCC has been investigating Obasa’s financial dealings since 2020, following reports by The Gazette detailing his alleged illicit acquisition of assets and mismanagement of public funds.

Although Obasa was not prosecuted then, fresh corruption allegations linked to budgetary misappropriation led to his recent impeachment.

EFCC insiders had indicated he was ripe for prosecution this time, but Tinubu’s intervention halted their move.

Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed that they had been awaiting a presidential go-ahead to arrest Obasa, but that signal never came—an indication of the First Lady’s influence in the matter.

Despite the ongoing corruption allegations, Obasa made a daring return to Nigeria from the U.S. last week, receiving a rousing welcome from supporters.

At a press conference following his return, Obasa denied all allegations against him, insisting that his impeachment was unconstitutional and politically motivated.

“If you want to claim that I’m corrupt, please prove it, let us see it,” Obasa declared.

In the 2023 general elections, President Tinubu lost Alimosho to the Labour Party’s Peter Obi, who secured 71,327 votes compared to Tinubu’s 62,909 votes.

Tinubu is reportedly keen on strengthening APC’s hold on Lagos ahead of 2027, making Obasa a strategic political asset despite his corruption allegations.

Obasa’s Removal Saga:

DSS Release Over 30 Lagos Lawmakers After 6hrs of Interrogation

. As Lawmakers Allege Seizure, Destruction of Phones During Interrogation

. Group Condemns Arrest, Says It’s Ploy To Undermine Democracy

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released all members of the Lagos State House of Assembly who had been detained in connection with a petition written by the former Speaker of the House, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.

According to reliable sources, over 30 lawmakers were interrogated by the DSS for more than six hours on Thursday, January 30, 2025, regarding a petition filed by Obasa concerning his removal as Speaker on January 13.

The DSS investigation followed Obasa’s claims that his ousting was politically motivated and involved misconduct, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement.

Despite the lengthy questioning, all the detained lawmakers were released late Thursday evening, around 7 pm.

After their release, the lawmakers chose not to provide any details about the nature of the questioning or the petition itself.

Instead, they described the encounter with the DSS as a “friendly visit” and indicated that the issue would be formally addressed in due course on the floor of the House.

Obasa, who had been Speaker since 2015, was removed by a majority vote of the lawmakers on January 13, 2025, amid serious allegations of misconduct.

His removal came during a period when he was absent from Nigeria, having travelled to the United States.

Upon his return to Lagos on Saturday, Obasa strongly rejected the corruption allegations levelled against him and criticized the process that led to his ouster.

He urged the lawmakers to follow the “right process” in addressing his removal, while maintaining that he had been unfairly targeted.

Obasa’s removal and the ongoing political tensions have sparked significant controversy in the Lagos State political landscape, with calls for transparency in how leadership changes are handled within the legislative body.

Meanwhile, a socio-political group in Lagos, the Concerned Citizens of Lagos have cried out over what it described as a systematic attempt to undermine democracy in the state.

The group’s reaction followed the alleged arrest and detention of some members of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

In a statement e-signed by Omoba Murphy Ajibola on behalf of Lagosians and Concerned Citizens, the group decried the recent developments, highlighting the detention of members of the House.

It was reliably gathered that DSS operatives are currently making frantic efforts to detain Hon Abiodun Tobun and Hon Gbolahan Yishawu.

While on call at the DSS office, operatives snatched and smatched Tobun’s phone.

 Poor Attitude To APC:

Isolo Council Boss, Olasoju Begs For Forgiveness

Embattled Isolo council chairman, Otunba Adebayo Olasoju was forced to eat the humble pie as the egg heads of the All Progressives Congress (APC) found him guilty of indifferent attitude towards the progress of the party in his council area.

The council boss who came to answer charges of nonchalance preferred against him by the Isolo chapter of the ruling party literally begged for forgiveness as the APC State Chairman, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi and his deputy reined on him as he was confronted by deluge of complaints and misdemeanors by local party chairman, Barr. Gani Bello.

At a closed door reconciliatory meeting held on Tuesday January 28th 2025 at the party secretariat, both men had appeared before the state party chairman and his deputy following a petition written by Isolo APC against the council chairman alleging indifference to party's progress.

Though details of the meeting were not immediately known but sources said Otunba Olasoju was lampooned by Hon. Ojelabi for not taking party affairs and welfare of members as top priority.

Hon Ojelabi reportedly blamed the loss of confidence of party members on the appalling poor attitude of the council boss to the party and the leaders.

The state chairman noted that the council boss cannot achieve anything without the platform created by the party. Hence, he charged him to take the welfare and progress of the party and it's members as top priority.

Going forward, Otunba Olasoju reportedly begged for forgiveness, promising to improve on the relationship between the council and the party starting with the complete renovation of the party secretariat.

He also promised to offset the backlogs of monthly subvention to the party

In order to bridge the gap between the council and the party, Otunba Olasoju was said to have pledged to introduce the small scale business grants for the benefit of party members.

He reaffirmed this commitment at yesterday's LGA meeting held at Ansar-Ud Deen Primary School, Isolo  stating that the grants would be given to seven selected party members from each ward.

Like a hen dripping from cold water, Olasoju was astounded when the state party helsman reportedly confronted him with similar complaints from influential party leaders from Isolo.

At this point, a humbled Olasoju pleaded for forgiveness, promising to turn a new leaf. Perhaps, the new development may have forced the party to lessen the noose on him as he desperately searches for the APC return ticket ahead of the

In a statement released to the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) Group recently,  the Bank announced that it s secured the full regulatory approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in respect of its recently concluded Hybrid Offer, comprising of a Rights Issue of 5,232,748,964 Ordinary Shares of 50k each at N36.00 per share and Public Offer of 2,767,251,036 Ordinary Shares of 50k each at N36.50 per share.

The Public Offer was 160.47% subscribed, with a total of 4,440,587,250 Ordinary Shares allotted based on the terms of the Offer and the CBN’s Capital Verification Exercise. The Rights Issue was also 100.18% subscribed with a total 5,232,748,964 ordinary shares allotted.

Proceeds from the Hybrid Offer will be strategically deployed to solidify the Bank’s position as the leading financial institution in Nigeria. The Offer, which opened on August 1, 2024 and closed on September 23, 2024 and sought to raise N290 billion through a combination of a Rights Issue and Offer for Subscription, was successfully executed largely as a digital Offer, embracing the power of technology to improve access to the equity capital market as it seamlessly leveraged the Nigerian Exchange Limited’s e-Offer platform.

The results of the Hybrid Offer, which garnered substantial interest from domestic and international investors, has positioned the Bank as one of the few banks in Nigeria to meet and even surpass the CBN’s N500 billion minimum capital requirements for Banks with International Authorization well ahead of the March 2026 regulatory deadline. The Bank’s share capital will now rise to N614.65 billion, which is N114.65 billion above the regulatory minimum requirement.

 GUILTY AS CHARGED?

The Many Sins of Embattled Ex-Speaker Obasa

The embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, is facing increasing scrutiny as multiple allegations of misconduct and corruption continue to surface. From questionable financial dealings to accusations of abuse of office, Obasa’s tenure has become a focal point of controversy. Critics have raised concerns over his management of public funds, while investigations into alleged fraudulent activities are reportedly underway.

One of his many sins in the Lagos State House Assembly is the controversial relationship between him and his alleged mistress, Adenike Ajibosin, a lady who became known by the tag 'Madam Speaker' and whose influence spread across all the arms of government in the House. New revelations from lawmakers and staff within the Legislative House paint a picture of her unchecked power and influence within the Lagos State House of Assembly (LSHA).

A ranking lawmaker (name withheld) told a few journalists within the Assembly that Adenike Ajibosin, despite holding no elective position, was considered the most powerful figure in the Assembly during Obasa’s tenure. Allegedly, she not only enjoyed lavish gifts and benefits but was also instrumental in decision-making processes, exerting influence over key legislative actions and financial allocations.

"She was so influential that for my colleagues to see Obasa to approve some things for them, they would have to pass through her. Commissioners and other officials in the executive arm often by-passed committees of the House in preference for her. If she didn't support a thing, just forget it; that thing won't see the light of day.

"I am telling you that Nike had input in every activity of the House. Any event that we organised here, she was always a core figure and centre of focus," the senior lawmaker lamented.

Adenike's prominence went beyond behind-the-scenes maneuvering. Eyewitnesses reported that she frequently attended official functions, often presented as Obasa's "chief of staff" despite lacking any formal role within the state government aside being the former Speaker's Adviser on Foreign Relations, an elevation she got from being a Protocol Officer. Her public appearances, sometimes accompanying Obasa to high-profile events, further fueled speculation about her control over Assembly affairs.

A former lawmaker who remains aggrieved with the system run by Hon. Obasa, gave further details saying Ms. Adenike wielded disproportionate power, largely due to her alleged relationship with Hon. Obasa. "Known for her influence over the Speaker, Adenike became a key figure in the Assembly, with her approval sought by lobbyists, contractors, and favour-seekers. We all know how she used her position to secure personal gains, and her home was often crowded with those seeking favours linked to the Speaker.

"Go and find out, Nike's power created a climate of fear within the Lagos Assembly, with even lawmakers reluctant to challenge her for fear of incurring her wrath," the former lawmaker said.

Obasa, as Speaker, is accused by his colleagues of using his Adenike as a conduit to funnel public funds into personal vaults. The former Speaker's colleagues claim that Obasa orchestrated multiple high-budget events, under the guise of Assembly functions where massive sums of money were siphoned off with Adenike reportedly at the centre of the operations. One of these was the Christmas party which the accusers claim was organized with several millions of naira.

"Let me also tell you, some of the events often billed as "welfare programmes" for legislative members were nothing more than a cover-up for the mismanagement of public resources. Instead of benefiting the people, the funds ended up enriching Obasa and his close associates, with Adenike enjoying the spoils. Many of us, as old as we are, were scared of going to the Speaker's office because of how he would look at us or respond to us. He would first keep us in the waiting room for many minutes or sometimes over an hour. Sometimes, we will be talking to him on confidential matters and Adenike would be there looking at us," a lawmaker said on the day Obasa was removed from office.

It was allegedly speculated that Adenike recently got a property in the Lekki axis of Lagos state. "If I am not making a mistake, she would be richer than some lawmakers. She amassed so much wealth," a lawmaker told journalists at the House.

"Remember last Monday when Obasa was removed as Speaker, he was said to have travelled to America. Do you even know if he was in the company of Adenike? while some elected members are not. I am telling you that lady has so much money and influence within and outside the Assembly during Obasa's regime. If the EFCC were to question Obasa, Adenike would also be investigated," the lawmaker added.

The scandal doesn’t end there. As Obasa's grip on the Assembly tightened, he got accused of pocketing "freebies" from the Governor’s office, including undisclosed financial perks meant for the lawmakers. While Obasa indulged in these perks, the treatment of fellow elected officials took a darker turn. Lawmakers under his leadership were reportedly treated as nothing more than pawns, with Obasa adopting an emperor-like attitude, dismissing their concerns and undermining their roles. His alleged nonchalant disregard for his colleagues and staff left many Assembly members feeling sidelined and powerless, with the ex-Speaker allegedly consolidating power for himself, turning a blind eye to the needs and rights of those around him.

As the investigation into Obasa’s alleged corrupt activities continues, the spotlight is now on Adenike Ajibosin, with many questionings how she became a central figure in the political machinery; whether her involvement led to the enrichment of both herself and the embattled former Speaker.

While the pressure mounts, Obasa's once-solid political standing is now under threat, with many calling for accountability in the face of these serious claims.

APC Petitioned Over Isolo Council Boss' Indifference To Party Affairs

The Isolo Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has forwarded a petition against the Executive Chairman of the council, Otunba Adebayo Olasoju over his alleged indifference towards party affairs in the council area.

The petition which was addressed to the state party chairman, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi is coming on the heels of the forthcoming local government elections in the state.

A source close to the party disclosed that the local chapter of the party took the decision to report the council boss to the party secretariat following unfavourable report on the council administration ahead of the forthcoming local elections.

The party, according to sources has been inundated with widespread condemnation as the council administration unsuccessfully grapple with difficulty in providing basic amenities despite huge monthly federal allocation at its disposal.

Again, sources say Otunba Adebayo has become a heavy burden on the shoulders of Isolo APC even as majority of it's members have become ardent critics of the council boss.

Worse still, the secretariat of the party located at Onawale Street, Isolo is literally in a state of comatose with overgrown weeds, cracked walls and general unhabitable environment. The poor state of the party secretariat, according to party officials is not unconnected with lack of funding occasioned by Otunba Olasoju's indifferent attitude towards the party and it's affairs.

A reliable source close to the egg heads at the secretariat told our reporter the council boss has literally starved off the party the much needed funds to run the secretariat and payment of over head cost.

"How do we even convince our members talk less of the electorates. He's a big burden on the party because there is no performance good enough to showcase him as our candidate in the coming election.

"Besides, he has starved the party of fund to run our programmes. How do we mobilize the electorates to vote for our candidates when the council chairman blatantly refused to support the party.

"The petition was ostensibly designed to notify the party of the impending danger in Isolo ahead of the elections. He showed his indifference during the last general election before some influential members of the party bailed us out of a near disaster," one of our sources revealed.

Meanwhile, the petition has received the attention of the state party secretariat with the summoning of Otunba to defend the allegations raised against him by the local party chairman, Barr. Ganiu Bello at the state party secretariat on Tuesday, January 28th 2025.

Mandate Rallies Council Poll Aspirants With Submission of Letter of Intent

The Mandate Movement (TMM) in Oshodi/Isolo is leaving no stone unturned in its bid to record a remarkable performance in the forthcoming local government elections in the state.

In a press statement issued by TMM Media Secretary, Lanre Olaleye, the Movement under the able leadership of Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) member, Chief Muraina Akanbi Taiwo has kick-started its preparation for the forthcoming local government poll in the state with the submission of letters of intent by aspirants ahead of the elections.

Across Oshodi/Isolo Constituency I and II comprising of Oshodi, Isolo and Ajigbo, it was a massive turnout of TMM members across the various political wards.

Among the crowd that thronged the various political wards were aspirants for council chairmanship and councillorship positions who submitted their letter of intent to contest the election under the platform of TMM.

The submission of the intent letter followed the introduction of the aspirants to members of thw wards including leaders and elders as well as other stakeholders of the group.

Speaking on ward meetings, one of the apex leaders in Isolo, Hon. Niyi Fabikun described the turnout as impressive noting that TMM members are mobilizing themselves for the great task ahead. “From the report we have received across the various wards, it was very impressive and that shows the zeal and commitment of our members for the task ahead” He said.

Meanwhile, local government meetings of The Mandate Movement (TMM) are expected to hold simultaneously at designated venues in Oshodi, Isolo and Ejigbo at 4:00 p.m.on Wednesday, 29th January 2025.

Asalu-Elemo Family Queries Baale of Mafoluku

. For Convening Unauthorized Meeting

Baale of Mafoluku Ilemo Kingdom, Chief Dayo Thomas has been queried by the Ojo Orisadeko Asalu-Elemo Royal Family for convening an authorized meeting of the family.

This was part of the resolutions reached Sunday, 26th January 2024 at the enlarge meeting of the family held at the late Osolo’s Palace, Isolo, Lagos.

The meeting which was attended by well over 120 family members from the five branches of the family came on the heels of the recent purported removal of the Family Secretary, Prince Abiodun Shekoni by a section of the family over his (Shekoni) refusal to give account of his stewardship on the family’s financial accounts and assets.

Though, the Family Head, Alhaji Monsurudeen Agbabiaka has since debunked the said removal of the Family Secretary as an unlawful exercise in futility, yet it was the major crux of discussion at the enlarge meeting.

The meeting lampooned Baale of Mafoluku Ilemo, Chief Dayo Thomas for spearheading the purported removal of the Family Secretary, Prince Biodun Shekoni.

Rather, the family unanimously passed a vote of confidence on the Family Head and the Secretary for their sterling performance and achievements since taking over the mantle of the family leadership.

It was also resolved that a letter should be forwarded Chief Dayo Thomas to explain reasons for allegedly convening a family meeting without the authorization of the Family Head.

Also, letters debunking the removal of Prince Shekoni as the Family Secretary were to be dispatched to official restating the true position of things.

Speaking on the purported removal of the Family Secretary, the Baale of Ojo Orisadeko, Chief Babatunde Oladehinde Shekoni did not mince his word in pouring cold water on the claim. “No, it is not true because in any family there are processes and procedures in selecting and removing officers of the family. In Ojo Orisadeko, we have a Family Head who has the authority to remove the Family Secretary. The Family Head was the one that choose the secretary using his own prerogative. The whole family appointed Alhaji Monsuru Agbabiaka as the Family Head and he used his own discretion to choose Prince Abiodun Shekoni to continue as Secretary after the late Baale of Mafoluku.

“I was told a meeting was held at Mafoluku where the purported removal of the secretary was announced but truly Baale Dayo Thomas is the Baale of Mafoluku, he doesn’t have the authority to remove the Family Secretary. The removal and retention of the Family Secretary is the prerogative of the Family Head in the person of Alhaji Monsuru Agbabiaka.” Chief Shekoni said.

This position was also corroborated by the five representatives out of the five branches of the family in separate interviews with The Snoop. They include Alhaji Moshood Bakare (Jeminatu Branch);Alhaji Wasiu Shabiolegbe (Shabiolegbe Branch); Alhaji Rasak Yahya Sunmonu (Sunmonu Branch) and Alhaji Wasiu Shekoni (Jinadu Branch). However, Hon. Jide Alli-Balogun representing Ayisatu Branch was unavoidably absent at the meeting.

Oshodi/Isolo Mandate Movement Gears Up For Council Polls

. Restructures Leadership for Effective Mobilization Drive

The Oshodi/Isolo Chapter of The Mandate Movement (TMM) is sparing no effort in mobilizing extensively for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the forthcoming local government elections.

A press release by the Press Secretary to the Movement, Lanre Olaleye on Wednesday 22nd January 2025 said the political group is poised to record a better performance this time around in the coming council polls.

To achieve this, the group has placed high priority on restructuring of its leadership status with the involvement of more critical stakeholders selected across the three council areas of Oshodi, Isolo and Ejigbo.

The restructuring is intended to bring all critical stakeholders together to achieve a united Mandate Movement in Oshodi/Isolo Constituency I and II, with every one working assiduously for the success of the political group as well as the APC.

Consequently, three layers of leadership structures have therefore emerged with Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) influential member, Chief Muraina Akanbi Taiwo occupying the tip of the apex leadership pyramid as the Chairman. He would be assisted by 12 other apex leaders selected from each of the three council areas. Their primary responsibility is to provide leadership and draw up plans and strategies for the smooth running of the political group across the three council areas as well as acting as an advisory body to the Chairman of the apex leadership on critical matters.

In Oshodi, the four apex leaders are Hon. S.O. Aina, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo), Elder Ogunshakin and a yet to be named leader. For Isolo, the apex leaders  include Hon. Niyi Fabikun, Hon. Shamsudeen Olaleye, the Isolo council chairman, Hon. Bayo Olasoju and Chief T.A. Amao while Ejigbo has Hon. Kehinde Bamgbetan, Ejigbo council chairman, Hon. Monsuru Oloyede (OBE); Engr. Fayomi and a yet to be named leader.

The second layer of leadership structure is the Leaders and Elders which comprises of the apex chairman, 12 apex leaders, present and past office holders, LGA coordinators, LGA woman leader and LGA youth leader.

The third layer of the leadership structure is occupied by the Stakeholders. It is an enlarged body comprising of the apex leaders, leaders/elders, LGA exco members and 10 nominees from each of the political wards.

Speaking on the new development, the Apex Leader, Chief M.A. Taiwo enjoined all members and intending of the group to embrace unity and cohesion- the basic ingredient for mobilization to achieve political victory. “We must all come together for the progress of our party. This is a mission we cannot afford to fail.” He said.

Oba Ajijola Installs Oldest Brazilian Heiress As Yeye Oba of Araromiu

The Olu of Araromi-Eleranigbe Kingdom, Oba (Dr) Hameed Adejoro Ajijola has conferred the honorary and traditional titles of ‘Yeye Oba’ and ‘Iya Olorisha’ on the Brazilian Mother of Saints, Iyalorixa Edelzuita of Oxaguian.

Iyalorixa Edelzuita, the heiress of King’s Stone is the first personality in the world to be bestowed with the two highest honours of the Eleranigbe Kingdom granted to women by Oba Ajijola.

The titles, ‘Yeye Oba of Araromi’ (Mother of the King) and ‘Yeye Olorisha’ (Mother of Deities) were bestowed on the oldest Iyalorixa in recognition of her struggle in defence of cultural rescue, traditionalism, devotion to the sacred and acquired knowledge- ingredients considered noble and vital for those who dedicate their lives to the priesthood.

The official ceremony for the presentation of certificates and installation was held at the Temple of Mãe Edelzuita – (Ilê Obá N'lá) - in Vila Valqueire, West of Rio. The event was well attended by guests and children of the house's saint.

The Iyalorixá Edelzuita de Oxaguian, the second oldest daughter of the Saint of Mãe Menininha do Gantois, received  the honors as a gift in the month in which she celebrated her 90th birthday (on 12th December  2024) and in the year in which she completed 75 years of servitude and obedience to the Orixás.

The honor reinforced the recognition for the abdication of life, which began at the age of 15, when she received the position and inherited the Sacred Stone of Xangô (over 200 years old and coming from Dahomey, present-day Republic of Benin) from the hands of her father.

With absolute responsibility and dedication, she was significant in the fight for the preservation and safeguarding of traditions and the worship of the Yoruba Gods and Afro-Brazilian culture.  She is currently the Iyalorixá with the longest tenure in office in the entire South American country.

Edelzuita de Oxaguian holds ancestral knowledge that has led her to lead major events such as: the Lavagem do Valongo and the Igreja do Bonfim, in the Caju neighborhood, where the fight for the restoration of the temple built on land donated by Dom Pedro II continues. "I was born predestined to be a guardian, a servant of the traditions and the sacred cult of the Orixás", she adds.

Born in Bahia and baptized Edelzuita Lourdes Santos de Oliveira, she arrived in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1960s. Settling in the city, she founded her temple that became an extension of the Ilê Ìyá Omi Àse Ìyámase, the Terreiro do Gantois. Since then, the Ilê Obá N'lá has become a piece of Bahia in Rio de Janeiro.

Moving easily among various religious leaders, her work and temple were also recognized by another Nigerian monarch, the King of Ifé. "The official document issued by the representative of the State of Osun attested to the traditional nature of my temple and approved its operation in Brazil. It also reaffirmed the roots and ties of Obá N'lá with the principles and traditionalisms of Africa," she emphasized.

Oba Hameed Adejoro Ajijola, who has a PhD in Economics and extensive experience in Administration, Advertising, Consulting, Marketing and Public Health, also combines all his scientific knowledge with his passion for culture and the merit of ensuring strength in the arduous task of preserving the traditions of his people.

It was on this strength he was invited to annual Ile Oba Nla Festival, where he honoured Iyalorixa and also delivered a lecture on ‘Spirituality and the Yoruba Culture’ to invited guests during the festival.

Apex Leadership: Mandate Leaders Reject Ganiu Johnson

Leaders of The Mandate Movement (TMM) in Oshodi/Isolo Local Government Area have rejected former member of the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Ganiu Abiodun Johnson as the Apex Leader of the political group.

Before now, the erstwhile Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure had literally picked up arms with Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) influential member, Chief Muraina Akanbi Taiwo over the apex leadership of the group.

Investigation revealed that at reconciliation meeting held on Monday 24th June, 2024 at the GRA Ogudu residence of one of the prominent Mandate Movement leaders, Sen. Anthony Adefuye, Hon. Johnson was chosen as the Apex Leader of Oshodi/Isolo Local Government Area. Johnson’s choice was said to have been arrived at following the recognition of only two mandate groups in Isolo.

The two groups recognized by the state leaders at the meeting then were Friends of Ganiu Johnson and KWAM 1’s Peacock group. But this decision did not go down well with some interest groups who felt alienated from the larger group. Though, Johnson was reportedly advised to reach out to Wasiu Ayinde and other leaders in Isolo with a view to forming a strong and formidable alliance.

But for more than two months, there was reportedly no report of Johnson extending olive branch to other leaders in the local government, a development which prompted the intervention of the influential GAC member, Chief M.A. Taiwo.

Irked by the lack of activities within the larger group, Chief Taiwo had summoned a leaders/stakeholders meeting on 14th August 2024 at Ibis Hotel, Ajao Estate to discuss the way forward for the Mandate Movement in Oshodi/Isolo LGA. At the meeting were leaders from Oshodi, Isolo and Ejigbo. They include Hon Johnson, Hon. Shamsudeen Olaleye, Hon. Monsurudeen Oloyede, Hon. Steven Ogundipe, Hon. Bayo Olasoju, Hon. S.O. Aina, Hon. Wale Adelana, Alhaji Segun Aribidesi and Hon. Adewoyin.

The meeting agreed to inaugurate LGA/LCDAs Executive Committees for Oshodi, Isolo and Ejigbo that will accommodate the various political groups across the local government. Among yhe recognized groups in Isolo are Pa Taiwo’s AUF; Hon. Fabikun’s group, Friends of Ganiu Johnson, Hon. Olaleye’s Turaki Support group,  K.1’s Peacock group and Hon. Bayo Olasoju’s Ileri Oluwa group. The meeting also resolved to share LGA and Ward positions among the five political groups that make up The Mandate Movement in Isolo.

But interestingly, this resolution did not go down well with Hon. Johnson who felt slighted that such a meeting was summoned without his knowledge as the acclaimed Apex Leader. He reportedly expressed his displeasure for not landing the Co-ordinator’s position for his crony, Nimota Olayemi. The positions were therefore shared among the leaders accordingly: K.1 (Co-ordinator), Hon. Niyi Fabikun (Secretary), Chief M.A. Taiwo (Youth Leader), Hon. Bayo Olasoju (Woman Leader), Hon. Olaleye (Welfare Officer) and Hon. Johnson (Less-privileged) which he reportedly declined.

For over two months, it was like the silence of the graveyard within the Mandate Movement fold until Chief Taiwo summoned yet another stakeholders meeting at his Ilasamaja residence. At the meeting, Hon Johnson again reportedly raised the issue of Apex Leadership, claiming he remained the authentic Apex Leader much to the chagrin of other leaders in attendance particularly Hon. Olaleye, Hon. Fabikun and Alhaji Aribidesi who stoutly opposed him on his absurd claim to the apex leadership when the group already has an apex leader in Chief M.A. Taiwo.

Alhaji Aribidesi’s indignation for Johnson’s claim was re-echoed by the Assistant State Secretary of TMM, Barr. Kayode Tinubu, whose intervention literally poured cold water on Johnson’s self-acclaimed apex leadership.

Tinubu pointed out that any GAC member in any local government automatically becomes the Apex Leader of that local government, noting that nobody can equate himself or herself with a GAC member in any circumstance.

Sensing his claim was roundly rejected by all the leaders at the meeting, the embattled former lawmaker reluctantly acceded to Chief Taiwo’s overall leadership but not until he was variously scolded for his sheer arrogance and lack of respect for leaders and constituted authority.

Attempt by The Snoop to get Johnson’s reaction on the leadership crisis through an interview was abortive as he pointedly declared he was not ready to grant any interview when our reporter called him on phone late November last year.

Even a reminder sent to him recently through his media aide, Dotun Oladipo was seemingly rebuffed. Oladpo promised to reach out to his boss and get back to our reporter. Unfortunately, he never did before this report was filed.

However, a close source to the former lawmaker, who craved anonymity, alleged a conspiracy against Johnson. “Yes, the agreement reached at the reconciliatory meeting on Monday, June 24, 2024 at Senaor Adefuye’s Villa in Ogudu, GRA clearly established Hon. (Engr) Johnson as the Apex Leader of The Mandate Movement,” he begins.

“It was also agreed that The Mandate Movement has been restructured on a state-wide level, eliminating the position of Principal Co-ordinator in the local government. The Apex Leader is now the sole recognized leadership position in that level,” he explained

Asked if there was a breach of agreement reached at Adefuye’s meeting, our source intoned. “Yes, there was a breach of the agreement. It was resolved that Hon. Johnson should convene meetings with key stakeholders: K.1 in Isolo, Hon. Kehinde Bamgbetan and Hon. Adewoyin in Ejigbo. These meetings were intended to resolve conflicts and establish a united Mandate Movement structure across Oshodi/Isolo Constituency II and Oshodi Local Government.

“However, instead of following these resolutions, Hon. Bayo Olasoju, the Chairman of Isolo and Hon. Monsuru Oloyede Bello (OBE) the Chairman of Ejigbo went ahead to invite Pa M.A. Taiwo, a member of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) to mediate over the composition of the Mandate Movement structure in the constituency. This action is inconsistent with the decision reached at the reconciliatory meeting as Pa Taiwo was not mentioned in the resolutions.

“Additionally, given his role in the GAC, Pa Taiwo is expected to operate at the state level of The Mandate Movement and not at the local government level.”

When asked what the future holds for The Mandate Movement in Isolo with the current development, he replied: “The future of The Mandate Movement in Isolo appears uncertain. Without the necessary cooperation among the key in the constituency, the group’s progress is at risk. What the Movemwnt needs now is unity and collaboration, not internal wrangling. Until this is prioritized, the prospect of the Movement will remain bleak.”

BANK OF HACKERS!

How Hackers Stole N2.95Billion From Sterling Bank’s Vault

Sterling Bank PLC may have become a big risk for customer’s deposit with the spates of fraudulent activities which has hit the bank in recent times.

This followed a detailed account of fraudulent and unethical banking practices which have seriously engendered customer’s lack of trust and confidence in the bank over the safe-keeping of their deposits.

Many of the bank’s customers are reportedly rattled by recent hacking of the bank’s vault by five suspected hackers who stole N1.25 billion and another N1.7 billion totaling N2.95 billion from the vault of the bank through insider’s connection.

The suspects were arraigned before Justice Louis-Allagoa of the Federal High Court, Lagos over allegation of hacking into Sterling Bank’s PLS banking platform and Bance application to steal a total sum of One Billion, Two Hundred and Fifty-Seven Million, Five Hundred and Thirty Six Thousand, Five Hundred and Seventy Two Naira, Fifty Kobo ( N1.257, 536, 572.50).

The accused Victor Nwabueze Ugochukwu (50), Favour Odeh (22), Adekunle Daniel (24), Akachukwu Alagbogoand Ogunlade Yetunde were brought before the court on Friday 17th January 2025 by operatives of Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) Ikoyi, Lagos.

Prosecutor Justine Enang informed the court the defendants in collaboration with unnamed internal staff of Sterling Bank and external accomplices committed the alleged offence on 3rd and 4th November 2024 by exploiting sensitive bank data and security system, unauthorized access point including IP addresses and device identifier.

According to Enang, their actions violated Section 7 (1) b and 14 (1) of the Cyber Crime Provision  Act 2015 as amended in 2004 as well as Section 18 (2) b and d of the Money Laundering Act 2022.

The defendants who pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, hacking and unlawful conversion of funds applied for bail through their legal counsel.

However, the prosecutor opposed the application, arguing that they posed a flight risk and citing multiple grounds to justify the objection.

Justice Luiz-Allagoa granted bail to each of the defendants in the sum of N50million with one surety of equal value. The surety must own landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

He, however, ordered the defendants to remain in the custody at the Nigeria Correctional Services until their bail conditions are met. HE adjourned the trial to 13th March 2025.

This sad development comes on the heels of yet another discovery of insider’s compromise that is threatening to undermine the integrity of the bank as another bank official allegedly colluded with a businessman to siphon a huge sum of N1.7billion from a customer’s account in August 2021.

The case which was then being prosecuted at Ikeja High Court, Lagos detailed how an official of the bank, Ifeanyichukwu Shallom Isituah and a businessman, Ighodaro Austin Osaretin allegedly stole the sum of N1,790,558,000 belonging to a customer of the bank.

An operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Adamu Mohammed, told the court that the agency received a petition with reference No: SB/IAG/12/EFCC/011 duly signed by the Head IT and Head Intelligence and Investigation on behalf of Sterling Bank.

Mohammed, who works with the Team C Cybercrime Department of the EFCC, while testifying on oath, said the petitioner alleged that a customer’s bank account was profiled via internet banking and the sum of N1.790,558,0 00.00 was transferred to various individuals and companies.

While led in evidence by the prosecutor, N. M. Anana, the witness testified that preliminary investigation by the bank revealed that the second defendant’s profile, Isituah, a female, was used to initiate the account on internet banking and more than 24 accounts got the same amount of money.

“Investigation letters were sent to FCMB, Zenith, First Bank, Fidelity Bank and Access Bank. Responses were received from the banks and the statement of accounts were analysed. The analysis revealed that most of the company’s accounts the money was transferred to were BDCs (Bureaux de Change).

“Some of them reside in Abuja, Kaduna and there was one address that we suspected to live in Lagos, Ndifreke Roberts. But all efforts to trace the address of Kaduna, Lagos and Abuja suspects did not yield any information to help the commission get them.

“On March 10, 2020, the DSS handed over the two defendants to the commission under the instruction of the AGF (attorney-general of the Federation) for further investigation. The two defendants’ statements were voluntarily taken under caution.

“The first defendant revealed that he has a company called Universal Agriculture Empowerment Initiative as an NGO which received the sum of N60 million as part of the transfer from that Sterling Bank customer’s account. He further stated that the money was received from one Osaretin (second defendant) and transferred to his account as a donation.

“That he introduced one of his friends who is the owner of Villavon International School who also received N100m from the said fraud.

“He further stated that he called a BDC in the name of Damo who owns Damoo Ten Ventures. Damo was invited to the commission and he volunteered a statement that the first defendant contacted him and he transferred N60 million to various accounts and further instructed the owner of the International School to transfer N95 million.

“The dollar equivalent was received in cash by the first defendant. The first defendant further stated that the money was used at IDP camps around the country. I cannot remember the specific location but he mentioned a place in Borno and Adamawa”, the witness said.

However, during cross examination by the defence lawyer, A. Okenile, the EFCC operative said that Sterling Bank gave the commission the information that the second defendant profiled the account for the alleged fraud.

When asked what links the second defendant to the alleged fraud, Mohammed said, “The offence was committed at Sterling Bank and it was reported. The offence took place during a public holiday and the bank realized it on December 28. The accounts of the customer we are talking about has never been profiled for internet banking. So we had to understand how it was transferred, which was through internet banking.

“The bank said the account doesn’t have internet banking access and it was a staff that did it and the second defendant’s profile was used to connect the account to internet banking. Without that profiling money cannot be transferred from that account.

“Even when the bank tried to contact her, she ran away. She was nowhere to be found. Not until the Department of State Services (DSS) traced, arrested her and handed her over to the commission”.

Yet again, two fraudsters were accused of obtaining the sum of N1.8 billion from Sterling Bank Plc by false pretence.

The duo identified as Messrs Ogbor Kehinde Eliot and Kelvin Ejere Chris were on Monday, October 22, 2018, arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before Justice O.A. Taiwo of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos.

They were taken to court on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, forgery and obtaining by false pretence.

The defendants, who were charged alongside a company, Danium Energy Services Limited, were alleged to have fraudulently deceived Sterling Bank Plc into lending them money through a fraudulent scheme with the pretence to finance local purchase of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), otherwise known as diesel, for supply to Total Nigeria Limited.

The first defendant, Mr Eliot, an alleged serial fraudster, allegedly used his company, Danium Energy Services Limited, to obtain the facility from the bank and was said to have defaulted in repayment, which was expected from the proceeds of sales of the petroleum products by Sterling Bank.
